ATE: Automated laser cutting for bespoke electric motors

ATE Antriebstechnik und Entwicklungs GmbH & Co. KG (ATE) develops and manufactures specialised electric drives with constantly evolving motor cross-sections. A KIMLA laser cutting system, featuring a custom-developed automatic loading and unloading unit, provides the foundation for cutting electrical steel sheets for prototypes and small batches, even outside of regular shifts.
In-house electrical steel production for prototypes and small batches with varying motor cross-sections.
Automatic loading and unloading, designed to meet the requirements of thin-sheet processing.
A solution designed for unattended 24/7 operation within a traditional single-shift environment.

One shift of staff. More scope for production.

ATE wanted to make its electrical steel production more precise and faster, while also being able to use the system outside of staffed hours. KIMLA and its German sales partner, ASKIAS, took on this challenge and developed an automatic loading and unloading system for the thin-sheet laser cutting machine.

Die Herausforderung

New motor cross-sections require flexible electrical steel production for prototypes and small batches. ATE was looking for higher precision and speed, as well as unattended 24/7 operation. During initial discussions with suppliers, no suitable automatic loading and unloading system could be found.

Unsere Lösung

KIMLA and its German sales partner, ASKIAS, took on the task: an automatic loading and unloading system was designed and developed for the thin-sheet laser cutting machine. This created a solution for planned production outside of regular shifts.

Das Ergebnis

The new system has been installed and was commissioned at the time of the video recording. ATE now has the technical foundation for automated laser cutting with loading and unloading, with the goal of producing high-quality electrical steel sheets outside of staffed hours in the future.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ATE need its own laser cutting system?

Due to the wide variety of products and technologies, ATE is constantly developing new motor cross-sections. An in-house laser cutting system is therefore essential, particularly for the production of prototypes and small batches.

What requirements did ATE have for the new system?

ATE wanted to achieve higher precision and cutting speeds compared to its previous technology. It was equally important to have the ability to operate the system around the clock, outside of regular shifts, without the need for operators.

Why was the automatic loading and unloading system crucial?

ATE operates on a single-shift basis but wants to be able to use the system beyond those hours. Automatic loading and unloading is a key component for this: it automates material handling that would otherwise require manual intervention.

What role did KIMLA and ASKIAS play?

ATE did not find a suitable solution for automatic loading and unloading during initial discussions with suppliers. KIMLA and the German distribution company ASKIAS took on the requirement and developed a corresponding solution for the thin-sheet laser cutting system.

For which applications does ATE manufacture electric drives?

ATE develops and produces electric drive components, including complete bearing-mounted electric motors. Areas of application include machine tools, aerospace, compressors, marine, motorsport, and test bench drives.

"We are absolutely delighted that the new laser cutting system is now installed and being commissioned, allowing us to cut high-quality electrical steel sheets for our electric motors over the coming years."
